Title: ECE Hosts the 2018 Annual FECEDHA Meeting

On Monday, June 4th, Shekhar Bhansali, Alcatel-Lucent professor and chair of FIU’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), and the ECE staff welcomed Florida electrical and computer engineering department heads to FIU’s Engineering Center for the annual FECEDHA (Florida Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Heads Association) meeting.
This year, FIU had the privilege to host the annual FECEDHA meeting where Florida ECE chairs discussed a broad range of topics, including trends in the ECE field, curriculum innovations and new educational programs such as ECE’s new bachelor of science in Internet of Things.
The all-day event started with welcome remarks from John Volakis, dean and professor of FIU’s College of Engineering & Computing. The Florida ECE chairs were given a tour of FIU’s state-of-the-art facilities, including the Wall of Wind.
“The goal of the annual meeting is for all Florida ECE chairs to come together and bounce off ideas with each other in an effort to consistently keep improving ECE departments across the State of Florida for our students,” said Bhansali.
In attendance were Phil Bernhard, director of Florida Institute of Technology’s School of Computing; Nurgun Erdol, department chair and professor of Florida Atlantic University’s Department of Computer and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science; John Harris, department chair and professor of University of Florida’s Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering; Zhihua Qu, professor and chair of University of Central Florida’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering; and Wilson Timothy, ECE professor and chair of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Department of Electrical, Computer, Software and Systems Engineering.
The ECEDHA (Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Heads Association) is the main organization, which is composed of heads or chairs of departments offering accredited programs in electrical and/or computer engineering in universities located in the United States and Canada. The organization was founded in 1963 where forty seven heads met in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Since then, there’s been an annual conference and ECEexpo for all members to attend.
