Dr. Jeffrey Fan at the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) has received an “Overseas Chinese Outstanding Inventor Award” honored by the central government of The Republic of China (Taiwan) in Taipei, Taiwan on March 7, 2013. There were 720 inventors around the world competing with the award. Dr. Fan’s recipient was based on the project, entitled “Gesture Recognition Control System – Research Commercialization” at FIU. It was first presented in the ECE seminar on November 16, 2012 and demonstrated to President Rosenberg in the VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration) Lab at ECE on February 6, 2013. The designs are also pending patents on Taiwan and China. 

Jeffrey Fan

Dr. Fan is responsible for the operations of VLSI Lab at FIU, the only Fabless IC Design House in Southern Florida. His research interests include nanometer VLSI, neuromorphic VLSI, image processing and recognition, embedded sensor designs, and wireless sensor networks.

Prior to his academic career, Dr. Fan served as Vice President of Vivavr Technology, Inc., and General Manager/co-founder of Musica Technologies, Inc.  He has held various senior technical positions in California at Western Digital, Emulex Corporation, Adaptec Inc., and Toshiba America.  His product line of research and development has included Virtual Reality (VR) 3-D animation, MP3 players, hard drives, fibre channel adapters, SCSI/ATAPI adapters, RAID disk arrays, PCMCIA cards and laser printer controllers.

Dr. Fan received his doctoral degree in electrical engineering at University of California, Riverside, and the Master of Science degree in electrical engineering from the State University of New York at Buffalo.  He also holds the Bachelor of Science degree in electronics engineering from National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan. He is the author of two books, the editorial board member of two international journals, General Chair and the organizer of an IEEE conference, and the member of several Technical Program Committees. He is currently a Senior Member of IEEE.
