Title: Hassan Eldeeb wins IEEE conference awards for his work to make electric vehicles more reliable

Hassan H. Eldeeb, electrical and computer engineering doctoral candidate and graduate research assistant at FIU’s Energy Systems Research Laboratory (ESRL), has received two majors awards from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
Eldeeb, a doctoral student whose research interests include the design, control and diagnosis of electric machines and electric drives, and energy storage systems for transportation electrification applications, received the Outstanding Research Paper Presentation Award at the 2019 Applied Power Electronics Conference (APEC), held in Anaheim, California and the Best Student Poster Award at the 2018 and 53rd IEEE Industry Application Society (IAS) Annual Meeting, held in Portland, Oregon.
Eldeeb received these awards for his work on the on-line diagnosis and prognosis of small faults in electric drive systems for transportation electrification. He is working on enhancing the reliability of electric drives of vehicles, including automobiles and aircraft, through the early detection of faults that can possibly occur in the motor drive system of an electric vehicle. The diagnosis algorithm can alert the driver of the vehicle of the fault existence at its early stages, to quickly schedule maintenance.
“My work aims to make electric vehicles more reliable. This way consumers can shift towards the transportation electrification option to reduce the carbon dioxide emission and the greenhouse effect,” said Eldeeb.
Eldeeb was born in Cairo, Egypt and received his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in electrical power and machines engineering from Ain Shams University in 2011 and 2016, respectively. He also worked as a research and teaching assistant for the Electrical Power and Machines Department. Upon receiving his master’s degree, Eldeeb moved to Miami to pursue a doctoral degree in electrical and computer engineering at FIU. Miami’s weather, its limitless outdoor activities and its diverse community attracted Eldeeb to make the move. “FIU is a pro-diverse community,” said Eldeeb. “I meet talented and skillful people from different cultures every single day.”
Eldeeb desired to advance his career in electrical power and machines engineering by working with top professors in the field, such as Osama Mohammed, associate dean for the College of Engineering & Computing, director of ESRL and distinguished university professor. “Mohammed and ESRL have a world-wide reputation in this field,” said Eldeeb. “Mohammed’s students have acquired hands-on experience during their study at FIU and many have landed great jobs in both industry and academia.”
After joining the ESRL lab, Eldeeb felt right at home. Through Mohammed’s guidance, Eldeeb was able to find a specific track to specialize in and felt encouraged to submit research papers to top journals and conferences.
At FIU, Eldeeb also works as a graduate research assistant, supporting Mohammed with writing proposals for new funding opportunities. He also works closely with Mohammed to organize seminars for students who are members of FIU’s IEEE IAS Chapter. The goal of the seminars is to provide students with a place to learn about the developments, opportunities and challenges in the electrical industrial application from both academic and industry perspectives.
