The multidisciplinary Artificial Intelligence & Workforce Development team accepted their Finalist Award. The team includes Dr. Shekhar Bhansali, chair and professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering; Dr. Leo Lagos, director of research, Applied Research Center; Dr. Nagarajan Prabakar, associate professor, School of Computing and Information Sciences; Mr. Brian Fonseca, director, Jack D. Gordon Institute for Public Policy and Citizenship Studies SIPA; Dr. Alexander Perez-Pons, instructor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering; and Dr. Himanshu Upadhyay, senior research scientist, Applied Research Center.
The team exemplifies successful multidisciplinary collaborative efforts to develop and expand STEM research programs in the cutting-edge fields of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Deep Learning and Cybersecurity that has multi-dimensional impacts on a national and global scale. They are focused on student research and internship opportunities to apply these technologies to improving health, the environment, cybersecurity and making the nuclear industry safer and more efficient. They have been awarded multimillion-dollar - multiyear research funding from the Department of Defense, Defense Intelligence Agency, and Department of Energy, which contributes towards FIU’s 2025 Strategic Plan. They have also created a new track in the College of Engineering and Computing to teach this cutting-edge technology.
