The Department of Defense is pleased to announce plans to award 33 grants totaling $17.3 million to minority institutions as part of the fiscal year 2011 DoD Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Minority Institutions Research and Educational Program. The selected institutions will conduct basic research and develop programs in scientific disciplines critical to national security and the DoD.

HBCUs and Minority Institutions offer a talented workforce in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics that can benefit the research and education efforts of the Department and the nation.

This announcement is the result of a merit competition conducted for ASD(R&E) by the Army Research Office, the Office of Naval Research, and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. The fiscal year 2011 program solicitation received 163 eligible proposals in response to a broad agency announcement issued in March 2011.

The research grants range from $281,521 to $620,000 and will have a performance period of 36 months. Grants will be made by the Army Research Office.

All awards are subject to the successful completion of negotiations between DoD and the academic institutions.

The list of recipients for fiscal year 2011 can be found here.
