Master of Science in Electrical or Computer Engineering

Admission Requirements

Applicant must have a bachelor’s degree in engineering, physical sciences, computer science or mathematics from an accredited institution or a bachelor’s degree in a related field and a minimum of one year work experience in electrical engineering, computer engineering or technology.

Degree Requirements

The Thesis Master’s program consists of 24 semester credit hours of course work, a minimum of 6 semester credit hours of Master’s Thesis and a final oral examination that includes an oral defense of the thesis.

Students may choose the non-thesis option for their master’s degree. The degree requirements differ from the thesis option in one aspect. The student must either:

  1. Complete 27 credits of coursework approved by their advisor and successfully finish EEL 6916 Graduate Project with at least a ‘B’ OR
  2. Complete 30 credits of coursework approved by Graduate Program Director.

Students choosing the non-thesis option must take:

  1. Two sets of graduate level electrical and computer engineering approved sequence courses from the catalog. Each set includes a minimum of 6 semester credit hours.
  2. Six semester credit hours at the 5000-6000 level in mathematics

Admission Requirements:

  • Applicant must have a bachelor’s degree in engineering, physical sciences, computer science or mathematics from an accredited institution or a bachelor’s degree in a related field and a minimum of one year work experience in electrical engineering, computer engineering or technology.
  • Applicant must have a GPA score of 3.0 or higher in upper level undergraduate work.
  • International students must have a bachelor’s degree equivalent to US degree or from a comparable institution and must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) if English is not their native language. Minimum required score is 550 on the paper-based test (PBT TOEFL), or 80 on the iBT TOEFL, or 6.5 overall on the IELTS test.
  • Applicants from science areas other than electrical or computer engineering will be expected to complete sufficient background material at the undergraduate level prior to unconditional acceptance into the graduate program.

Professional Track for EE


This general track has been designed to meet the need of students whose interests of study are much broader, not limited by the courses described in those sub-plans.

Students in this track adopt non-thesis option.  The degree requirements are

  1. Two courses on math electives
  2. Two sets of graduate level Electrical Engineering courses. Each set includes a minimum of 6        semester credit hours.
  3. The remaining elective courses must also be selected from the ECE course list by the student and the academic advisor based on the student’s career objectives.

Professional Track for CpE

This general track has been designed to meet the need of students whose interests of study are much broader, not limited by the courses described in the sub-plan. 

Students in this track adopt non-thesis option. The degree requirements are

  1. Two courses on math electives
  2. Two sets of graduate level Computer Engineering courses. Each set includes a minimum of 6 semester credit hours.
  3. The remaining elective courses must also be selected from the ECE course list by the student and the academic advisor based on the student’s career objectives.
